A former Armaguard employee will spend the next six months behind bars after stealing $285,000 from a company van.
The West Australian reports, Dale Jason Grosser, who was a health, safety and training officer with the company, spent three weeks planning how he would steal the cash from the armoured vehicle, studying the delivery schedule.
The 43-year-old drove his work car to Shoalwater Shopping Centre on September 8 and used keys he had stolen from the Armaguard depot to unlock an armoured vehicle while the guards were restocking an ATM.
WA's District Court heard Grosser placed duct tape over the internal security camera before stealing a bag containing $285,000 cash, reported The West Australian.
The father-of-three then returned home before asking a teenager who lived across the road to hide the bag of money.
Grosser was later arrested when security guards noticed tape on the internal camera and reported the incident.
The teenager told his mother about the bag of money and she contacted police who recovered it.
According to The West Australian, Grosser's lawyer Cameron Cole told the court his client was suffering from severe anxiety and depression at the time and his wife had also been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
The court heard Grosser told police he “wanted to get caught because he needed a way out”.
The 43-year-old was sentenced to two years and six months in prison but will be released after serving six months.
The remainder of his sentence will be suspended.
