Byford tradie accused of taking deposits for renovations but not carrying out the work

A Byford tradie has been charged with eight counts of stealing after allegedly taking deposits from customers for renovations but never carrying out the work.

The 30-year-old self-employed tradesperson allegedly responded to advertisements on social media and quoted on various renovation jobs across several suburbs including Balga, Cooloongup, Mindarie, Stirling, Victoria Park, Kardinya, South Perth and Wanneroo, between December 2024 and March 2025.

But an investigation by the Financial Crimes Squad found the accused failed to complete the works.

The man is due to appear in the Armadale Magistrates Court today, July 7 charged with eight counts of stealing and one count of with intent to defraud utters a forged record.

Detectives are warning people to stay vigilant when engaging with tradie services via social media platforms.

“We are urging Western Australians to remember to conduct reference checks on tradies who answer your advertisements and never be pressured into handing over substantial deposits,” Detective Senior Constable Goodgame from the Financial Crimes Squad said. 

“When it comes to engaging tradespeople, it is wise to do ABN checks, request document insurance, identification, and have a formal contract drawn up and signed.  

“And remember, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
