Cats banned from parks, reserves in City of Rockingham

Cats are set to be banned from 44 parks and reserves across the City of Rockingham.

The City's new Cat Amendment Local Law 2024 will come into effect on December 23.

From this date, cats will no longer be allowed in the identified prohibited areas throughout the City. 

Mayor Deb Hamblin said new rules prohibiting cats from roaming these locations would protect the City’s conservation areas. 

“Wildlife that lives in areas like parks, reserves and wetlands are incredibly vulnerable to being preyed on by cats,” she said.

“This law amendment will support the aims of the City to ensure cats remain safe and healthy at home, and ensure our wildlife is not put at risk.” 

Under the law, cat owners will face a penalty of $200 if their cat is found in the banned areas.

The cat will also be handed over to City officers for further investigation. 

Mayor Hamblin said the City would be assisting cat owners to understand the new law through community education programs.

“In February we are holding a Feline Fest 2025, a free community event for all ages dedicated to all things cat care, their habits, and the safety benefits of containment,”

“Cats are safest at home and we encourage cat owners to keep up responsible cat ownership and ensure their cats are microchipped, sterilised and registered.”
