City of Kwinana residents go green with third bin

Residents in the City of Kwinana will soon have a third bin with the Council approving a green-lidded garden organics bin.

The Garden Organics (GO) waste system will come into effect in the 2024/25 financial year, providing residents with more options for sorting their 
waste and reducing what is sent to landfill. 

Mayor Carol Adams said there is a strong demand for a third bin, and with an average of 34 per cent of Kwinana’s general waste bin filled with compostable garden organics, specifically leaves, weeds and lawn clippings, the GO bin will be a welcome addition. 

“The benefits of the three-bin GO system are many. When our residents are using their GO bin the end product is compost. This provides the potential for the compost to be used by the City on public parks or bagged for residents," Mayor Adams said.

“Our community knows the value in diverting waste from landfill and this introduction of the GO bin will improve the amount of waste we are able to recover, diverting organic waste from going to landfill."

The State Government Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030 details its recommendation for all Perth metropolitan and Peel region Councils to transition to Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) and the City’s announcement is the start of the journey. 

“We really are ‘good to GO’ with our community waste in Kwinana. It really is the best way forward as far as diverting our waste from going to landfill and this coupled with our commitment to the Waste to Energy plant will see Kwinana best placed to meet its waste goals," Mayor Adams said.
