The City of Rockingham has taken out silver in the Excellence in Local Government Award for Tourism category at the 2021 Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards.
Running for nearly 50 years, the Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards recognise organisations for their commitment to excellence in tourism and are run by Tourism Council of Western Australia.
This year’s awards were held on Saturday November 13 at Crown Perth.
The City was competing against eight other local governments as a finalist in the awards and took out second place, with the City of Fremantle the winner and the City of Greater Geraldton coming in third.
City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin collected the award on behalf of the City and said it was recognition of the extensive effort the City had carried out over the past two years to promote Rockingham as WA’s premium coastal destination.
“Guided by the Tourist Destination Strategy 2019 – 2024, the City has committed significant time, resources and effort to further Rockingham’s status as a key tourist destination in the Perth Metropolitan area,” Mayor Hamblin said.
“Central to these efforts were the City’s Rediscover Rockingham destination campaigns, which included Rediscover Adventure, Rediscover Summer Holidays, Rediscover Relaxation and Rediscover Springtime which is running until the end of November 2021.
“Rockingham has been featured on Channel 9’s popular Destination WA TV series, and extensive billboard marketing campaigns across Perth (including at Perth Underground Train Station and on both the Kwinana and Mitchell Freeways) have been delivered.
“Earlier this year the City also launched a trial of the City’s Rediscover Rockingham tram service. All of these efforts have contributed to remarkable levels of tourism growth, with data revealed last year showing day-tripper visits to Rockingham had increased an unprecedented 33%.
“The City gratefully acknowledges Tourism Council WA for recognising the City’s success in building our tourism brand. We look forward to continuing to widely promote the range of exciting activities and experiences on offer in Rockingham, the place where the coast comes to life.”
