City of Rockingham secures $5 million in funding to upgrade crash prone roads

Several roads prone to serious crashes in the Rockingham area will be upgraded after the City received $5 million in Blackspot funding.

11 projects will be funded by the State and Federal Governments in 2021 and 2022.

Around $422,000 will be spent on the installation of pre-deflections to encourage drivers to slow down at the intersection of Safety Bay Road and Mandurah Road roundabout in Baldivis.

Baldivis Road, between Kerosene Lane and Fifty Road, will also be widened, have its street lighting upgraded and have median islands installed at a cost of $975,000.

Around $2.9 million will be spent on the installation of street lighting, crash barriers and realigning the curve of the road at Mundijong Road between Telephone Lane and Duckpond Road.

While $559,000 will be spent on the upgrade of the intersection at Read Street, Chalgrove Avenue and Centaurus Street.

The other funded projects are listed in the City’s Business Plan.

Mayor Barry Sammels said the City had secured the highest number of funded projects as well as the most funding out of all metropolitan local governments in Western Australia.

“Blackspot projects are those that have a recorded history of incidents with a specific focus on fatal/and or serious crashes. The Blackspot funding the City has secured from both the federal and State Government will play a key role in boosting safety for motorists across the community,” Mayor Sammels said.

“Importantly, the delivery of these projects will further support the targets of the City’s award winning Road Safety Action Plan, which has the overarching goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries on local roads.”
