City secures funding for Rae Road Shared Path project

Accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists moving along one of Rockingham’s most important stretches of road will soon be enhanced, after the City of Rockingham secured $325,000 from the Department of Transport (DoT) towards the construction of the first stage of the Rae Road Shared Path project. 

The full project will be approximately 7 km long starting at Rockingham Station and running along Rae Road, Garden Island Highway and Safety Bay Road towards the Esplanade on the Rockingham Foreshore. 

The first stage will deliver an initial 1.5 km of shared use path, beginning at Rockingham Train Station.

The DoT grant will cover 50 per cent of the project cost, with the City contributing the other half. 

This latest funding announcement follows on from the City securing $75,000 for the detailed design of the project last year. 

City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin said the delivery of the Rae Road Shared Path was a key part of the City’s Long Term Cycle Network Plan. 

“This new shared path will be a crucial east/west link that connects pedestrians and cyclists with several facilities and attractions in Rockingham,” Mayor Hamblin said. 

“Once complete, community members will be able to travel from Rockingham Station all the way to the Safety Bay Road/Point Peron Road intersection. Importantly, it will connect the station to Lake Richmond, Point Peron, the Rockingham Foreshore, Safety Bay Foreshore and several local schools.

“The City gratefully acknowledges the funding support provided by DoT. As part of the design process, we are seeking input into the project and how it can best serve the community, and we encourage residents to share their thoughts on the design.”
