Cockburn man charged with animal cruelty

A 32-year-old man from Cockburn has been charged with animal cruelty after two dogs were found tied up in his backyard without food or shelter.

Inspectors attended the man's home in Yangebup in the City of Cockburn on July 7 after a cruelty report was made concerning two female Staffy-cross dogs.

One dog was found tied to a washing line on a chain less than a metre long with no access to water or shelter.

The dog was underweight, with her hips and ribs both visible.

The second dog was tied to a tree and also had no access to water or shelter.

Both dogs were taken to RSPCA WA in Malaga and vets confirmed both animals were dehydrated and extremely hungry and thirsty.

The accused Cockburn man has since been charged with animal cruelty and will face court later this month.

The maximum penalty for a charge of animal cruelty is $50,000 and five years imprisonment.
