Demolition begins at old Kwinana Power Station

The demolition of the Kwinana Power Station is underway with explosives used to bring down an old boiler at the site.

The explosion was felt and heard kilometres away as far as Roleystone, Harrisdale and Byford on Sunday.

Oakford resident Aaron Pike told 7NEWS, his whole home shook.

“It shook everything; the window’s shook, I’ve got a drinks cabinet that shook, the TV shook,” he told 7NEWS.

“It stopped everything, because we were mid conversation, and everything stopped, we were like, ‘What was that?’”

One chimney stack has already been removed with works underway to remove the second.

The old coal-fired power station was built in 1970s and was in operation until 2015.

Demolition works will continue until 2027 to make way for battery energy storage systems and gas fired turbines.
