Driver charged after allegedly 'deliberately' mowing down young man in Coodanup

A 37-year-old man is due to face court today, charged over an alleged hit-and-run in Coodanup that left a young man fighting for life.

Ty-kai Yarran was walking along Steerforth Drive with a friend when he was allegedly struck by a white Hyundai Getz around 9.30pm on Monday.

The 20-year-old suffered critical injuries and was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital where he remains in an induced coma.

The driver allegedly failed to stop and help Mr Yarran.

He was arrested late that night and the Hyundai Getz was seized.

The alleged incident unfolded outside of Mr Yarran's grandmother's home.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, Melinda Miller said her family are devastated.

"Very scary, when I seen Ty-kai laying on the ground I thought the worst," she said.

"But he opened his eyes and looked at me and I just knew maybe there was a chance that he was going to survive.

"Nobody should hit someone and just drive away (like) they were nothing.

"He's a beautiful young man, (he) means the world to me, my grandson." 

The accused driver from Dudley Park man has been charged with no authority to drive (suspended), failing to report an incident occasioning death or grievous bodily harm, with intent to harm, did an act causing bodily harm and failing to stop an ensure assistance after an incident occasioning bodily harm.

He is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court today.
