Canning MP Andrew Hastie has slammed the State Government for delaying the opening of a homelessness facility in Mandurah by two years.
Mandurah Common Ground, a $28.1 million facility, was first announced six years ago as part of a plan to tackle high levels of homelessness in the Peel region.
Construction was due to begin in early 2023 but has been pushed back to next year, while the opening date will now be 2026 instead of 2024.
Mr Hastie said the McGowan Government has let the community down.
"It’s a serious blow to many of Mandurah’s most vulnerable, who are already coping with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s out-of-control cost-of-living crisis," he said.
“How hard does it have to get for people in Mandurah before we see some action from Labor?
“Day after day my office receives calls from locals seeking housing assistance as they struggle to make ends meet.
“The government can’t just ignore this issue and hope it goes away.”
A State Government spokesperson said they remain committed to the East Perth and Mandurah Common Ground projects.
“The East Perth Common Ground tender process closed in February 2023. The evaluation process is currently underway," the spokesperson said.
“The Mandurah Common Ground project is undergoing a building design review process, and as previously outlined, any learnings from the tendering process for East Perth will be considered for the Mandurah development."
The 50-unit facility is set to be built on the corner of Allnutt and Dower streets.
