Instructor dies while abseiling with students at cave near Margaret River

An abseiling instructor has died during a school excursion at a cave near Margaret River.

The 53-year-old was with a group of students and teachers from a secondary school in the metropolitan area when he fell while abseiling at Brides Cave in Boranup around 3.20pm on Thursday.

Police say a number of students and teachers had already abseiled down to the bottom of the cave when the instructor fell.

"First aid was provided to the man until an RAC Rescue helicopter paramedic was lowered down into the cave and took over care of the patient," a WA Police spokesperson said.

"Tragically, the man became unresponsive and was unable to be revived. He died at the scene.

"DFES State Emergency Service volunteers and colleagues of the deceased man were able to provide guidance and instruction to safely recover the students and teachers along with the deceased from the bottom of the cave."

WorkSafe have been advised of the incident, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
