Locals urged to rally together for clean-up event in memory of Luca

Locals are being encouraged to attend a clean-up event in Mandurah this weekend in memory of Luca.

Luca died back in 2019 after becoming entangled in discarded fishing line.

Despite several rescue attempts the young dolphin could not be saved.

Since his death, the coastal community including the River Guardians and the Coastal Waste Warriors have hosted a clean-up event - Luca's Legacy - in a bid to remove as much rubbish as possible from around Mandurah's waterways. 

It's hoped the event, on Sunday, October 23, will help educate people and protect other dolphins from fishing line entanglement.

"We need just a couple of hours of your time for a family friendly clean up," the event description read.

"In return we will have educational stalls, free activities after for the kids and a sausage sizzle ( meat or vegetarian) for all participants as a thanks for your hard work.

"There's even some great prizes to be drawn randomly from signed in participants and merchandise available to buy that will support rescuing our beautiful dolphins and seabirds."

Attendees are asked to meet at the John Tonkin College Marine Centre on Thisbe Drive in Dawesville at 8.45am on Sunday to sign in.
