Man charged over Port Kennedy bushfire

A 25-year-old man has been charged over a bushfire in Port Kennedy.

Police say the man allegedly set up camp in the Scientific Park Nature Reserve off Port Kennedy Drive when he lit a campfire around 3.45pm on Sunday.

Due to the strong winds at the time, the fire quickly spready to surrounding bushland.

Luckily, firefighters with the help of a helitak were able to extinguish the blaze which burnt through around one hectare of bushland.

The man from Kalamunda has been charged with breach of duty and is due to appear in the Rockingham Magistrates Court today.

"Members of the public play a vital and significant role in assisting investigators by providing timely information relating to suspicious activity in a fire area," a WA Police spokesperson said.

Rewards of up to $25,000 are available for information that leads to the identification and conviction of an arsonist.
