Man who threatened to kill Premier pleads guilty to downgraded charge

A man who threatened to kill Premier Mark McGowan while standing outside of his Rockingham home has had his charge downgraded.

Gavin Michael Higgs, 33, appeared in the Rockingham Magistrates Court via video link from Hakea Prison on Friday where he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of disorderly behaviour in public.

The West Australian reports, in an interview with Rockingham Police, Higgs admitted he was drunk during the incident and he "regretted" his actions.

The court heard Higgs stood outside Mr McGowan's house around 8.30pm on April 21 and shouted “f..k you ... I’m going to kill you” before walking down the street still yelling.

According to The West, Higgs' lawyer Margaret McNulty said her client's actions were intended as a joke and he realised that the "drunken mistake" was more serious than he thought.

The court heard Higgs is back in jail after breaking bail to visit his dying father.

The 33-year-old was ordered to undertake a 12-month community-based order to address his alcohol addition.

He is also banned from being anywhere near Mr McGowan and his wife Sarah for five years.
