A 28-year-old man has been charged after allegedly punching an elderly man in the face at Cicerello's in Mandurah.
The 76-year-old man was sitting outside at the seafood restaurant on Mandurah Terrace around 5.10pm on Wednesday when the accused allegedly approached him and struck him.
The blow caused him to fall backwards into a flower bed, before the offender allegedly punched him again while he was on the ground.
The elderly man suffered facial injuries and was taken to Peel Health Campus for treatment.
Mandurah Detectives released CCTV images of the accused who was then arrested at a nearby home a short time later.
He has been charged with aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm and will appear in the Mandurah Magistrates Court today.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Kris McDonald said it appeared the alleged attack was unprovoked and the elderly victim was just simply waiting for his family to arrive.
“The elderly gentlemen was simply attending our local restaurant area to meet up with family,” he said.
“Families should feel they can come to the local area here in Mandurah and spend time with their family and go home safely, that’s just unbelievable.”
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestopperswa.com.au.
