Mandurah Council will next week consider options for repairing the damaged roof over the 25m indoor pool at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC).
In May, the 25m pool was closed due to structural damage to the roof above it.
That section of the roof is part of the centre's original roof structure before the MARC's redevelopment in 2016.
The damage was investigated by a structural engineer who advised it was due to a break in a section of the roof structure likely caused by excessive loading from inclement weather or a similar event.
Based on the advice of two structural engineering consultants, City officers are recommending that Council make the decision to completely remove and replace the roof over the 25m pool.
It is estimated to cost around $2.5m and take at least 16 months to complete, due to the current high demand of the WA construction industry and availability of materials.
City officers are recommending the funding is covered through existing reserves.
The City’s insurer is still reviewing the claim to determine whether the damage is insurable.
Once the Council has made a decision on how to progress, a timeline for the repair works and re-opening of the 25m pool will be made.
Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre will keep members updated directly and via the City’s website www.mandurah.wa.gov.au
