Mayor Rhys Williams to nominate for Labor preselection in Mandurah seat vacated by David Templeman

Mandurah mayor Rhys Williams will throw his hat in the ring for preselection as a Labor candidate in the seat of Mandurah.

It comes after David Templeman announced his resignation from politics on Tuesday after a career spanning nearly 24 years.

He has been the Member for Mandurah since 2001.

In a statement to The West Australian, Mr Williams confirmed his intention to nominate for Labor preselection.

“I’m intending to put my hand up for preselection as a Labor candidate for the State seat of Mandurah,” Mr Williams told The West Australian.

“In respecting that process, I will wait until preselection is complete before making any further comment.”

Mr Williams has been Mandurah's mayor since 2017.

Speaking to West Coast Radio on Wednesday, Mr Templeman said the process to select a candidate to replace him will get underway in the coming weeks.

"The people of Mandurah will make their choice on the 8th March...I'm very excited, I think we're going to have a great candidate for Mandurah," he said.

"I'm very excited about who that will be, I think they will be an excellent representative and when they're announced I'll be right behind them."
