New mental health mural unveiled in Shoalwater

The City of Rockingham has launched a new mural in Shoalwater which showcases the variety of strategies that people use to tackle their own mental health issues. 

The Re[Frame] Mental Health Public Art Mural at McLarty Hall was inspired by people with lived experience of mental illness.

It is characterised by the theme “Find What Works For You” and focuses on stories of recovery.

Importantly, it highlights how recovery can differ from person-to-person.

The City engaged art therapist Paul K. Davis to facilitate two community consultation workshops with local residents who have experienced mental illness. 

These workshops drew out the themes that inspired the mural, with artist Carol Clitheroe then developing the design and delivery of the artwork.  

City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin said the aim of the mural was to ‘reframe’ the conversation around mental illness. 

“The Re[Frame] Mental Health Public Art Mural was borne out of the community’s desire to acknowledge mental health issues,” Mayor Hamblin said. 

“The input provided by people with lived experience of mental illness and/or suicide loss has been integral to the delivery of the project and the City gratefully thanks them for the courage they’ve shown to be involved.

“We hope the artwork resonates with community members and can help people through any mental health challenges they may be experiencing.”   

The plaque on site at the mural contains a QR Code that visitors can scan to access information on a wide range of community support services that are available on the City’s website via rockingham.wa.gov.au/communitysupport
