Peel Health Campus investigating man's death after doctor sends him home with painkillers

Peel Health Campus is investigating after a Mandurah man died three weeks after a doctor sent him home with painkillers.

The man's wife, who did not want to be identified, told 6PR her husband went to the hospital on April 23 with severe back pain and a high temperature.

“When he was eventually seen after a four-hour wait in emergency, the doctor didn’t actually even examine him, he had a fever (but) he just brushed it off as being back pain,” she said.

“They sent him home with some severe strong pain killers, his advice was if he doesn’t feel any better within six weeks with the back pain to go and see our local GP.

“Unfortunately, things went from bad to worse.”

Three days later the man was taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital by ambulance with organ failure.

His life-support was switched off last Thursday night.

The woman said the doctor at Peel Health Campus was “blasé” and did not do any blood tests on her husband which she claims "would've picked up an infection". 

In a statement, Peel Health Campus CEO Andrew Tome told 7NEWS he expresses his deepest sympathy to the woman and her family and a detailed investigation will be conducted.
