Police officer rescues two men off Silver Sands beach

A police officer has rescued two men off a Silver Sands beach.

Police were flagged down by a member of the public on Ormsby Terrace around 4.30pm on Tuesday after they noticed two men were struggling in the water.

The men were about 10-metres offshore and five-metres apart.

An officer ran into the water and swam out to one of the men, before pulling him back to shore.

The same officer then swam back out to the second man and was helped by a member of the public with a paddle board.

They managed to get the second man, who was losing consciousness, onto the board and take him into shore.

Both men, aged in their 30s, were taken to Peel Health Campus by ambulance.

9NEWS reports one of the men was a Good Samaritan who had originally swam out to save the other man.

That's when the Good Samaritan also needed saving himself.
