The Rockingham Arts Centre (RAC) will showcase some of the finest ceramic and paper based artwork in Western Australia, with Valerie Schönjahn and Miguel Castro’s exhibition Beyond Surface running from Wednesday, March 8 to Sunday April 2, 2023.
The RAC, located at 11 Kent Street in Rockingham, is the City’s purpose built arts centre that showcases a variety of events, exhibitions and workshops year-round.
Beyond Surface is the latest free exhibition which will be delivered as part of the RAC’s Annual Exhibition Program.
The theme of the exhibition is “Visual Conversations in Paper and Clay” and the works on display will showcase Schönjahn’s work specialising in clay and ceramics, as well as Castro’s renowned papercutting skills.
Throughout the exhibition both artists will also facilitate clay and papercutting workshops, where community members can join in to learn more from the experts about how each art form works.

City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin encouraged community members to explore Beyond Surface during March and April.
“Last year the City delivered a $400,000 refurbishment to the RAC in line with its Cultural Development and the Arts Strategy. Part of these works focused on strengthening the flexibility and function of the facility so the City can deliver enhanced art exhibitions,” Mayor Hamblin said.
“We are delighted to be able to host Beyond Surface, and this joint exhibition by Valerie Schönjahn and Miguel Castro composes a number of distinct individual pieces that are open to interpretation.
“The opening night for Beyond Surface will be held on Saturday 11 March 2023 from 6pm – 8pm and we look forward to welcoming community members as they explore this fascinating exhibition.”
