RSPCA investigation underway after greyhound found buried in shallow grave in Orelia

RSPCA WA is investigating after a greyhound was found wrapped in blood-soaked blankets and buried in a shallow grave with wire around its neck in Orelia.

A member of the public made the gruesome discovery near Bampton Road on Wednesday, February 14 before reporting it to City of Kwinana rangers.

The grave was located at the end of a cul-de-sac near a reserve. 

Upon observation the dog appeared to have sustained large scrapes to his front legs and the ranger believed the dog had been hit by a car and then strangled with a piece of wire which was digging into his skin when found. 

The large male greyhound was black in colour with a white crest and was wearing a blue collar without an owner identification tag. 

The dog’s remains are now in the care of RSPCA WA and a microchip and ear tattoo have been identified.

RSPCA WA Inspector Manager Kylie Green is asking anyone with information relating to the incident to report it to the RSPCA WA cruelty hotline. 

“We are asking anyone who knows anything about this shocking incident to please contact RSPCA WA and let us know,” she said. 

“We have very little information about the incident and the dog at this stage so if you saw something or heard something on or around February 14 please come forward.”

The maximum penalty for an animal cruelty conviction is a $50,000 fine and five years in prison.
