Shire of Murray receives Tidy Towns award

The Shire of Murray's Riverbank Restoration Project has earned them a Tidy Towns award.

The Shire was presented with the Sustainable Communities Environmental Sustainability award at the Tidy Town awards gala at Optus Stadium on November 29. 

The award recognises achievements in adaptation to environmental change with one project focusing on the preservation of natural environment, water conservation and energy efficiency.

Shire Chief Executive Officer Dean Unsworth said the Riverbank Restoration Project sits within the Shire’s commitment to ensure Murray’s ecosystem is managed sustainably for the benefit of current and future generations.  

“Our team, with support from the Bindjareb Rangers, Syrinx, Landcare SJ and the State NRM Office have restored the riverbank along the Murray River through sustainable soft engineering practices to prevent further erosion, create dune stability and provide habitat for native flora and 
fauna,” said Mr Unsworth. 

“Thank you to Keep Australia Beautiful Council for acknowledging the hard work and dedication of our Environment team and partners to ensure our natural areas are protected and maintained for generations to come."

This is the second time the Shire has been a finalist in the awards for this project.
