South West beach reopened after shark bites man's paddle board

Scientists are examining a paddle board to determine the species of shark that knocked a man into the water at a South West beach on the weekend.

Gary May, 75, was paddle boarding at Yallingup Mainbreak about 300m off the coast on Saturday afternoon when the shark latched onto his board.

"The impact knocked me forward and I ended up landing on top of the actual shark and I could see the head attached to the board," Mr May told 7NEWS.

Mr May managed to get back onto his board and paddled safely back to shore before raising the alarm.

City of Busselton rangers spent the weekend patrolling the area along with the Surf Life Saving WA helicopter, but there have been no further shark sightings.

The popular surf break has since reopened.

The paddle board has been taken to Perth for scientific analysis.
