A UK nuclear-powered submarine has arrived in Western Australia, docking at Rockingham's HMAS Stirling at the weekend.
HMS Anson, with a crew of around 100 Royal Navy submariners, will spend the next month at Garden Island undergoing maintenance.
The vessel's arrival is part of the AUKUS partnership between Australia, the UK and the US.
“This Submarine Maintenance Period is the latest demonstration of the continued momentum across all three partners to deliver AUKUS," Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said.
“Australia, the UK and the US will work together over the coming weeks on the maintenance of HMS Anson – developing our skills, systems and infrastructure as we prepare for Submarine Rotational Force–West to begin next year.”
The 97-metre-long vessel is armed with both torpedoes and land-attack missiles and it is the first time that Australia has ever undertaken maintenance on a UK nuclear powered submarine.
It comes after American nuclear-powered submarines made similar maintenance visits to Australia in 2024 and 2025.
