Underground bunker containing large scale hydroponic cannabis set up discovered in Karnup backyard

Two men have been charged with a string of drug offences after police allegedly uncovered an underground bunker used to grow cannabis in Karnup.

Mandurah Police, with the assistance of Mandurah Detectives and officers from the Drug and Firearm Squad executed a search warrant at a rural property in Karnup around 6.30am on August 15. 

Officers located a sea container on the nine acre property with a trap door leading to more containers which were buried underground.

"It will be alleged, the underground ‘bunker’ contained a commercial scale hydroponic cannabis grow set up; including WIFI automatic running water systems, lighting and a carbon dioxide feeding system," a WA Police spokesperson said.

"A total of 25 cannabis plants were seized.

"A further search of the acreage uncovered an improvised clandestine drug laboratory within a partitioned section of a granny flat detached from the main house."

A 46-year-old Karnup man has been charged with cultivating a prohibited plant with intent to sell or supply, possessing a prohibited drug (cannabis) and possessing a controlled weapon.

A 48-year-old Karnup man has been charged with manufacturing a prohibited drug.

Both men will appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on September 13, 2023.
