WA records huge surge in COVID cases

WA has recorded a huge spike in COVID cases with 17,033 reported on Wednesday.

Today's record number is an increase of over 4600 cases from Tuesday's total of 12,390.

The number of people in hospital with COVID remains steady at 275, with seven of those in intensive care.

Today's report includes three deaths dating back to May 6, a woman in her 90s, and two men in their 80s and 70s.

"As we expected, the number of COVID-19 cases in our community has risen in recent days," Premier Mark McGowan said.

"This is due to a number of factors, including easing public health measures and the end of school holidays.

"While the rising case numbers has been expected, it's an important reminder that the pandemic is not over yet.

"That’s why I want to reiterate that just because masks are no longer required in most settings, it doesn’t mean that they should be gathering dust.

"Western Australians should still feel comfortable putting on a mask in busy or social situations, if they want - in fact, it's encouraged."
