WA's hard border with eastern states to remain until 2022

Western Australia's border restrictions with Victoria have tightened overnight with the state reclassified as 'high risk'.

It comes as COVID cases continue to grow in Melbourne amid the Delta outbreak.

Overnight, Victoria recorded 246 new local cases, the state's biggest spike in over a year.

Anyone entering WA from Victoria will now have to prove they have had a least one dose of a COVID vaccine and test negative before travelling.

On Monday, Premier Mark McGowan said it could be some time before WA's border reopens to New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT and he would need to see vaccination rates of 80 to 90 per cent before setting a date.

“I have got to do what I have got to do so we are COVID-free,” he said on the Today Show.

"We have opened at various points of time along this road and I expect we will open again once we get to very high levels of vaccination. I expect that will be some time next year."
