Woman takes first steps since horrific Rockingham hit-and-run

A Rockingham woman is learning to walk again three months after she was allegedly mowed down by a car, breaking nearly every bone in her body.

Nicole Naughton was allegedly struck by a Nissan X-Trail on Evinrude Bend in Rockingham on May 18 while walking her dog.

The accused driver, Jye Cooper, allegedly failed to stop and help the severely injured Mrs Naughton, instead driving off and leaving her until paramedics arrived 10 minutes later.

The 36-year-old was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time.

Speaking to 7NEWS, Mrs Naughton said she has since undergone multiple operations.

“I had a broken nose, two broken shoulders and collarbones, 12 broken ribs ... punctured lung, lacerated liver, broken left arm, broken left leg in the femur, and then the broken right leg from my knee down,” Mrs Naughton said.

Mrs Naughton, 59, is undergoing intensive rehabilitation at Fiona Stanley Hospital and was able to take her first steps with a walking brace recently.

Her husband Frank has been by her side every step of the way.

Mr Cooper, who is behind bars, is next due to appear in the Rockingham Magistrates Court on August 29.
