Young dolphins rescued after stranding near Mandurah

Two young dolphins have been rescued after becoming stranded in Goegrup Lake near Mandurah.

The juvenile dolphins, named Solo and Tswizzle, are regulars to the Serpentine River who often venture into the lake, but extremely low tides left them high and dry on Sunday.

Luckily, the stranded pair were spotted by members of the public who raised the alarm.

A coordinated rescue effort soon got underway involving the Mandurah Volunteer Rescue group, Mandurah Cruises staff and volunteers, and DBCA wildlife and marine rangers.

"Both are less than 5 years old. Sadly solo appeared possibly blind in his left eye," the Estuary Guardians Mandurah Facebook post read.

"Unfortunately we are in the middle of extreme low tides, one of the worst we have seen.

"Whilst rescue group volunteers do all they can to scan low tide areas, there are many areas we cannot reach and drones could not fly due to high winds. 

"We will continue to do what we can to cover as much area as possible while the dangerous tides continue. We thank those also keeping an eye out across the shallows."
