The City of Rockingham has unveiled a new bathroom facility specifically for people with a disability.
Located in Churchill Park at the Rockingham Beach Foreshore, the Changing Place facility includes a height-adjustable adult-sized change table, a ceiling track hoist system, shower, toilet and additional circulation space for people with complex disability.
A Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK) is required to enter the facility.
Most people who need to use a Changing Place will have their own MLAK key, however for those who don’t, a key can be borrowed from the City of Rockingham or the Cruising Yacht Club for a single use.
The need for a Changing Place in Rockingham was identified as a high priority in the City’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2022-2026, with a number of service providers advocating on behalf of clients with high care needs who depend on these facilities to access and engage with the community.
City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin said the Changing Place is a key element of the access and inclusion upgrades at the foreshore designed to help more people enjoy the beach, the park, specialty shopping and the entertainment precinct.
“The Changing Place will help many more people connect with this beautiful location, and with other people, by giving them the opportunity to come out and participate in events and activities that would otherwise have been out of reach," Mayor Hamblin said.
The Department of Communities supported the project with $150,000 of State Government funding.
