Community rallies around Mandurah family after kite surfing accident leaves father a paraplegic

The community is rallying around a Mandurah family after a father-of-five was left a paraplegic following a freak kite surfing accident.

Michael Roberts, 40, suffered a spinal injury after a crash landing at Falcon Beach two weeks ago.

The experienced kite surfer was left permanently paralysed from his chest down.

"I replay it constantly and go 'what could I have done to land that kite differently'," Mr Roberts told 9NEWS.

Michael and his wife Naomi got married just three months ago.

"We now need to live basically our entire married life with me like this and she didn't sign up for this," he said.

Mrs Roberts has since created a GoFundMe page to help raise money for her husband's ongoing medical treatment and to make accessibility changes to their family home.

The page has already raised nearly $35,000 in just three days.

“Overnight our whole lives and the lives of our children were turned upside down,” Mrs Roberts wrote on the page.

“From being the happiest we have ever been as newlyweds three months earlier to the uncertain reality we now face."

Mrs Roberts said Michael's rehabilitation journey has begun and thanked the community for their donations and support.

“Michael transferred to Fiona Stanley hospital today and we couldn’t be more excited about it,” Mrs Roberts wrote.

“Being here means Michael will begin rehab tailored to his individual needs and is one step closer to coming home.

“We are so grateful and overwhelmed by all of the support we have received from so many people.

“It brings tears to our eyes to know there are so many amazing people in our lives and we can’t wait to be able to say ‘thank you’ to everyone in person one day.”
