Homelessness Awareness Week: Mandurah community rallies behind those sleeping rough

The local community has rallied behind those sleeping rough in the Peel region by donating a haul of products during Homelessness Awareness Week.

Several donations of new sleeping bags, blankets, torches, childrens and adults footwear and non-perishable food items have been brought into the radio station by generous locals over the past couple of weeks.

Donations are still being accepted at 141-143 Mandurah Terrace up until 5pm Monday, August 7.

Karen Podmore from Westaus Crisis and Welfare Services said the donations are extremely important for those doing it tough.

"It's fantastic, the whole community has come together," she said.

"We've seen lots of food, sleeping bags, blankets, doonas coming in.

"We thank the community so much, it has and will help a lot of homeless in the Peel region."

Ms Podmore said winter is a real struggle for those experiencing homelessness.

"There's a lot of families and individuals sleeping rough," she said.

"They're sleeping in cars, sleeping in tents, sleeping in backyards and in over crowded houses.

"Sleeping bags, blankets, anything to get them through the winter, it all helps," she said.

Homelessness Awareness Day will take place on the Eastern Foreshore in Mandurah on Thursday, August 10 from 9am to 3pm.

There will be over 30 agencies offering support to struggling individuals and families.
