The long-awaited Byford rail extension is now complete and open to commuters.
Part of the Metronet project, the Armadale line now extends eight kilometres south to a new train station in Byford, allowing Serpentine-Jarrahdale locals to travel to Perth in just 46 minutes.
"This is an incredibly exciting moment for communities in the south-east of Perth," Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.
"Byford is one of the fastest-growing areas in our city and now they will have access to a world-class train line for the first time.
"The upgrades to the Armadale Line have been transformational - linking more people to public transport, better connecting communities and unlocking around 14 hectares of new public open space, which will see the delivery of new parklands, playgrounds and amenities."
The budget for the Byford Rail Extension blew out by half a billion dollars to $1.33 billion and took nearly nine years to be delivered following a State Government commitment in 2017.
Ms Saffioti blamed the blowout on COVID, overseas conflicts and an expansion of the overall scope of Metronet.
