Australia Day celebrations in the City of Rockingham will be moved back to the original date of January 26 after council voted in favour of the change.
Australia Day events were held on January 27 this year for the first time in Rockingham, but a recent community survey revealed more people were in favour of the 26th.
The survey of 10,000 randomly selected households was carried out in July 2024 asking residents if they would prefer celebrations to be held on the nearest Saturday to January 26 (or the following Sunday if January 26 falls on a Saturday) or on January 26 (Australia Day).
Nearly 2000 responses were received with just over 63 per cent in favour of Australia Day events to be held on January 26.
Those celebrations will include a free family event, a citizenship ceremony and a community citizen of the year awards presentation.
In Tuesday's council meeting, councillors voted in favour 10 to two of returning events back to January 26.
Councillors Craig Buchanan and Dawn Jecks voted against the decision.
